How many times have you stayed at someone’s home or vacationed at a resort where the showers were pure heaven?  Maybe you’re holidaying somewhere spectacular, but once you step in the shower, you forget about what’s just outside the door and long to stay forever beneath the perfectly-pressured rainfall. But you know you shouldn’t. The showerhead itself is half the size of your beach towel and your lingering certainly wouldn’t do anything to help its EQ (Eco-Quotient).

Good news. There are now multiple companies that are combining “the perfect showerhead” with eco-love through their new and improved eco luxury showerheads. You can probably deduce from what their makers call them that they are not your average drippy eco showerheads. EcoLuxuryShowers.com explains the truth about why their product is better than even those high-pressured giant rainfall heads: “The Quality in a shower comes from VELOCITY, and VELOCITY comes from PRESSURE, and PRESSURE is dissipated through VOLUME. So, because our shower uses less VOLUME, there is now MORE PRESSURE to give you BETTER VELOCITY and an IMPROVED SHOWER EXPERIENCE.”

Weary travellers are now reporting seeing eco-shower heads pop up in more and more places. And while they might not look like much, those travellers are also reporting (from the shower) that the luxury eco showerheads are quite luxurious!

The Landmark London is always looking for ways to make our guests more comfortable and where possible, combining whatever that is with making the best choice for the environment as well. We have seen so many cashmere-clad women and men pass through our halls here to know that cashmere is a fabric that is universally loved and sought.

And what’s not to love about that soft and pure goat hair sweater, scarf, or blanket? Maybe the answer is a little obvious: those goats haven’t always been raised in the most humane of conditions, but that is changing and Londoners, as much as anyone, are ready to pounce on this latest attire-gone-eco-friendly. Not too long ago, the Financial Times featured an article about the changing practices of cashmere “growers” as well as the attitudes and efforts made by retailers. “Ethical” and “eco-friendly” being such hot selling points, high end and luxury retailers have no choice but to offer at least both options allowing the consumer to make the decision.

In the cashmere vendor CocoonU’s statement on their site, they explain why ‘their cashmere is better’: “The raw fibres for CocoonU products are supplied by nomadic goat herders in Outer Mongolia where the extreme winter climate makes for a longer and finer hair than from other sources. By combing rather than shearing the animals the yarn used by CocoonU is simply unbeatable for softness and durability. The fibres are processed and items are manufactured to CocoonU designs in a co-operative factory in Mongolia, all resulting in superb quality materials and finished products.”

Looks like the London 2012 Olympic Games, while requiring a lot of new construction, could turn out to be quite helpful for the City’s green ranking. Preparation for weary travelers and an influx of spa-goers and afternoon tea-takers are some of our biggest concerns, but the Capital itself will soon be impressing visitors with its eco-friendliness. One of the latest items on the list to showcase is an expanded fleet of Mercedes eVitos. GreenCarCongress reports that the electric cars release no emissions and are “also expected to be fully compliant with the Mayor of London’s proposed new clean air standards for London taxis, due to be introduced in time for the London Olympics.”

Robert L. Kanode, President & CEO, Valence Technology  was quoted as saying, “This is a real game-changer for fleet vehicles. Valence has been transporting Londoners for over 4 years in double deck hybrid buses. The eVito Taxi is a logical next step for the city, and Valence is ready to immediately fulfill Mercedes’ high volume energy storage needs with our proven, safe lithium phosphate technology.”

Although the fleet is not expected to hit London streets for another year or more, you can already find the gas-powered Vito transporting Londoners and our many tourists. We’re just not sure we’re ready to give up those beloved black cabs that are so ubiquitous around here.

Wondering what has been going on lately at the Landmark London? Well, last month we launched a new vision, a five year campaign titled “Think Independent, Be Independent, Stay Independent, Be part of our family”.

If you have ever visited our hotel, you know that Landmark staff members are so much more than employees. Our team is made up of wonderfully devoted, intelligent, and hard-working people. That’s why, in the spirit of our new vision, we’ve made the decision to further embrace their abilities by encouraging greater independence empowering them to do their best work.

Take a look at our updated guiding principles:

·      To engage, empower and recognise people at all levels

In keeping with our independent theme, staff is expected to honour each guest with an acknowledgement that he or she is an independent individual. We will continue to seek every way possible to make the guest’s experience in our hotel as such as well… individual and special.

We look forward to putting our updated principles to the test and know that each and every guest will have an opinion about how we are doing. We welcome feedback as to your impressions.

The Winter Garden restaurant at The Landmark London is proud to receive the Tea Guild Award of Excellence for our Afternoon Tea.

Tea Guild Inspectors – all experts in tea – anonymously visit each Tea Guild member, at least twice over the competition judging period (from end July to end October) and check that their very strict criteria is being maintained in the 16 categories that are judged.  These 16 categories include; hygiene and cleanliness, décor, staff attitude, efficiency of service, and include eight tea service categories such as tea appearance, flavour and knowledge of tea.

As the standards that Tea Guild members offer their customers continue to rise, the Tea Guild recognises those members who achieved almost top marks in the Top Tea Place and Top London Afternoon Tea competitions.  These awards, known as The Awards of Excellence, are considered to be the “Michelin Stars” of the tea world.

The Winter Garden is a wonderful spot to enjoy one’s afternoon tea. Our staff have worked hard (and it shows!) to create offerings that meet and exceed the expectations of the most knowledgeable tea connoisseurs. We hope to see you here soon!

This year, the five-star Landmark London has a new top spot to claim. Soon the hotel will be home to tallest hotel Christmas Tree in the UK. The Christmas tree measures over 30 ft. and will be set up on the 7 December 2009. It will be placed near the entrance to The Winter Garden Restaurant, in the hotel’s magnificent eight-storey, glass-roofed central atrium, but will be visible from many angles in the hotel.  Santa won’t be able to miss it!

Landmark London Christmas Tree 2009

The striking towering tree will be adorned with thousands of lights and ornaments true to the tradition of the hotel, built in 1899. As part of the Landmark’s effort toward reducing its carbon footprint, this year the tree is coming from a local provider. In keeping with the Landmark’s eco-conscientiousness, this supplier employs a 1:1 re-planting programme, replacing every tree taken.

Guests (and Santa!) will be able to admire the Christmas tree in all its glory whilst enjoying the festive season in style at The Landmark London. Then, in a few weeks when the ornaments have been put away and the lights have been turned off, the tree will be made into paper.
